BRANDING RESEARCH

JP Morgan Chase

JP MorganChase's logo features a sans-serif typeface that gives a modern look to the logo as well as a sense of purpose. The logo also features a small vector logo. Simple and clean again. The whole logo is very fitting of their corporate clients. the logo does not need a lot of explanation, keeping it simple is all it needs to be.

This is where I need to go with my design as currently the designs have too much going on, it needs to be tripped back.

Deloitte

Deloitte take the minimal logo to a new level with just a simple sans serif font that is bold so it still stands out. To add a small bit of detail they have a green dot at the end which is very effective, the subtlety of the use of colour makes it a lot more effective.

Microsoft

The Microsoft logo follows the same pattern, a sans serif font with a very minimal logo. The same strong use of block colour really makes the logo recognisable even though it is so simple.

Mastercard

Mastercard recently had a rebrand by pentagram, in which they completely simplified their logo down to just the core element of the interlocking circles. The change follows research by Mastercard that found that more than three quarters of people asked were able to identify the brand from the two interlocking circles alone.

I really like the simplicity of this logo and the cleverness of it as it is still so recognisable as the Mastercard logo. I would like to create something similar for the Kankan Moussa logo. Having something clean and simple that is obviously Kankan Moussa is exactly what the logo needs. Obviously Kankan Moussa is not a well known brand so it won't have the same instant recognisabilty that the mastecard logo does but the idea is still the same.

FINAL OUTCOME KANKAN MOUSSA

The finished logo incorporates 9 dots in a grid shape. The colours used are taken from swatches of photos of the Kola Nut.

For the competition submission I put together this pdf showing my design ideas along with mockups to make the idea clearer to the judges.

FURTHER DEVELOPMENT

Leading on from my research on the branding of successful corporate branding, I took inspiration from Mastercard's rebrand. The logo uses a simplistic two dots with is instantly recognisable a the MasterCard logo due to the colours. I thought maybe I could do something similar with the Kankan Moussa logo using just a circular shape to sum up the nut and focus more on colour.

I started also playing around with the colours of the design as I feel that the current pink is not reflective enough of the Kola nut.  While I was collecting colour swatches for my logo designs I came across a great idea for the logo, different swatches of colour placed in a grid looks really effective compared to the previous designs. I tested out the number of dots and the placing of them to see what works best.
