For our final crit I got feedback on my two options for my final design. I had one with the mockingbird and the tree and one just with the tree. The feedback I got was that my illustrations were unique and worked well in my design, people said that the bold modern typeface contrasted well with the soft illustrations. The contrast in colour gave the design depth.
After reading the feedback, the design with just the tree is the design I am going to use as people say the layout works better and the typography fits well with the illustrations.
Imaginative concept and original interpretation
My concept in hindsight is a bit obvious using the mockingbird I could have done something less obvious, but I think the illustrations give an original aesthetic to the cover. the illustrations show tradition but paired with the bold typography they work well to look current.
Competently executed with strong use of typography
The bold typography works well within the design, contrast in colour makes it stand out from the illustrations, it also fits nicely against them as it is wrapped around. the typography still stands out from the illustrations even through the illustrations take priority on the design.
Appeal to a contemporary readership
The colour scheme fits the contemporary audience, and the bold and bright typography. The illustrations have their own style and are not perfect drawings so seem more modern than other covers for the book that i have looked at.
Show a good understanding of the marketplace
The book is a classic novel and although need to appeal to a contrary audience cannot be too graphical and crisp that it takes away from its morals, the book covers I looked at all used imagery similar to mine and so from my research I think the design fits within the marketplace
Point of difference
My colour scheme means that the book will stand out on the shelf agains books of its genre. It is not too similar that it is identical to other books on the market. Illustrations give the book a unique aesthetic to that of there books on the market.
Technical Design changes
I have been given a few pointers to tweak my design over the weekend I need to put the text on the spine the other way round, I need to change the off white background as it is too wishy washy. also need to wrap the text instead of making it see-through. There are also some spaces I need to align in order to keep the design balanced.
