PENGUIN STUDENT DESIGN AWARDS BRIEF

I am going to do the adult non-fiction award The book By Owen Jones, The Establishment, and how they get away with it.

The penguin book cover awards happen every year and I will analyse previous winners work to see the style that the judges are looking for.

Previous winners designs are very minimal and pick up a small part of the content of the book and transfer this into visual imagery. All of the work has a strong focus on typography but this isn't always the centre of the work but must compliment the whole design. The design need to be bright and stand out on the shelf. Non-fiction covers have a more formal approach, using more stark design. Last years non fiction winner for Stephen Hawking's- A Brief History of Time uses the theories in the book to create interesting pictures perfect for a cover and sum up the scientifiic nature of the book.
The Establishment was published in 2014. The Author, Owen Jones is from stockport but went to Oxford University in contrast to the masses that did go to Oxford from well-off backgrounds.

The book talks about establishments in the UK and how they are controlled by certain individuals.

The topics discussed in the book include:
-Politics
-The Church of England- The church owns 1 in 4 schools in the uk and used to be the largest land owner.
-The Murdock's
-Corporation Tax
-MP Expenses scandal
-2008 Financial crisis

'One day, this Establishment will fall. It will not do so on its own terms or of its own accord, but because it has been removed by a movement with a credible alternative that inspires. For those of us who want a different sort of society, it is surely time to get our act together.'

The Brief
-The design must fit the sizing guidelines (B format, 198mm high x 129mm wide, spine width 22mm)
-Have an imaginative concept.
-The design must be able to sit on the shelves of a traditional bookshop but also that of supermarkets or online and ebooks.
-must be an individual interpretation of the book

Current covers of the book.
Existing book covers use a bold serif typeface. This promotes the formality of the book, it is non fiction and talking about serious matters. The book is aimed at people more interested in intellectual matters and maybe a generally older audience. The covers both have an illustration of a man with a top hat, signifying their high class and a mask or them sneaking around indicating thier lying nature. The pictures sum up the general theme of the book, high up people how have a great influence on society but have a shady side.

Establishment means: A group in a society exercising power and influence over matters of policy, opinion, or taste, and seen as resisting change.

The target audience of the book is an older audience, people in education or people interested in politics.
The price-point of the book is £9.99 the book is printed paper back
