CIGARETTE STYLE PACKAGING

FAST FOOD MARKET RESEARCH

MCDONALD'S

Mcdonald's branding uses key words in bold on their packaging to make it appeal, words like 'juicy' 'great' and 'cold' these bold words is a simplistic way of giving the food a strong appeal. The packaging has a strong aesthetic that doesn't need much imagary to tell you about the product. In recent years mcdonalds have refined the packaging to incorporate this typographical design that simplifies their aesthetic as a brand as it already has a strong history. Their slogan 'im lovin it'

KFC

KFC use a simple 3 colour scheme for their packaging that is striking and iconic. The brand is represented by the face of Colonel Sanders a freindly associating face that has been around for many years and has become very iconic with the brand.

ZADS GUILT FREE TAKEAWAY

ZADS GUILT FREE TAKEAWAY

After deciding i want to brand a vegan takeaway for my outcome i did some research on existing concepts and have found a takeaway in Manchester that does just what i want to do.

Zad's Serves traditional greasy takeaway food that is fully vegan. The burgers are made from soya while hot dogs use seitan, also known as wheat gluten, which is high in protein yet has almost no saturated fat. 50p from each sale is donated to local vegan organisations and charities.

The branding of Zad's is based on the 'guilt free' element rather than the fact that it is vegan. This is good because it promotes the healthy lifesyle that veganism can bring without the stigma of the word 'vegan'

“Whilst it’s easy to think that our target market and customer base is geared towards vegans, what we actually hope to do is show those who do not follow a vegan diet how amazing the food can be.
“We’ve all seen the memes and heard the jokes about what vegans eat and Zad’s is there to show that living a cruelty free lifestyle doesn’t have to mean giving up your favourite foods.”

PIZZA EXPRESS

When in Pizza express the other week i noticed they offer a great vegan option on their pizzas. They have won the Peta Vegan Food Awards.

WAGAMAMA

wagamama's has a dietary requirements menu where you can order vegan meals that still look just as appetising and the normal menu.

MY EXPERIENCE

Since doing research on veganism i have been trying to convert to a vegan lifestyle myself. For health benefits as well as the welfare of the animals involved in the industry and the environmental issues. I have tried out some plant based milks and cheese and it is actualy not that bad, its a bit strange at first purely because you are used to cows milk but once you get used to the difference its probably nicer, i bought a hazelnut milk and it tasted just like nutella. The only time i struggled with it was after a night out stumbling to macdonalds drunk and ordered a chicken burger. It made me think, why is there not more meat free options? Most vegan options are expensive and very heathy. I think it would be quite good to explore creating a fast food chain that is purely vegetarian/vegan.

MARKET RESEARCH

I went to the supermarket to have a look at what vegan options there are out there. Most supermarkerts seem to have a 'free from' section  where there are many snacks and healthy alternatives to sweet treats. You can buy vegan chocolate, vegan milk, vegan cheese, vegan yoghurt, vegan icecream and pretty much everything you could think of. Admittedly it is more expensive than orginary milk based products but i personally think this is because they are branded as luxury. They are aimed at a high class audence.

I have also found out that most coffee shops offer dairy free coffee from soy milk to nut milks and coconut milk. Many of these are not even offered as vegan alternatives but as nice tasting drinks that have nothing to do with mising milk.

VEGAN PROTEST IN LEEDS

I was in Leeds city centre on the weekend and i stumbled upon a vegan protest raising awarness on veganism and animal cruelty in the meat and dairy industry. I got given a leaflet trying to raise awareness on this issue.

RESEARCH

I watched the documentary cowspiracy, i found some very striking facts from it.

  • Animal agriculture is responsible for 18 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, more than the combined exhaust from all transportation.
  • The leading causes of rainforest destruction are livestock and feed crops.
  • Animal Agriculture is responsible for 20%-33% of all fresh water consumption in the world today.
  • 11,365 litres of water are needed to produce 1 pound of beef.

https://freefromharm.org/why-vegan/

reasons why people dont think going vegan is a good idea
-we are designed to eat meat
we aren't  we have herbiove teeth, need more fibre rather than meat, the countries where deseases are less common eat less meat
we don't have protein receptors but do have salt receptors
Heart disease is the biggest killer in the usa, because of cholesterol build up in arteries.

why do we have dogs and cats as pets and not cows and pigs? its because society have made it this way.

-You get deficiencies from being vegan
protein can be found in beans, legumes, green vegetables and most plant based foods.
eggs have loads of cholestoral.
calcium can be found in green leafy vegetables as well as all of the  fibre and vitamins.
iron can be found in lots of plants and its a different type of iron  that can help prevent heart disease.

-Killing animals is a fact of life
animals are bred in their billions each year purely to be killed, many never even see the outdoors and don't have a good or long life.
animals still fear death and feel the same as us humans do

-Egg and dairy industry doesn't kill animals so its okay
eggs even including free range eggs the hens are genetically modified to lay up to 300 eggs annually when they are only meant to lay up to 30 this is extremely painful for them and often fatal.
they are kept in tiny cages that they can hardly even spread their wings in and slaughtered when they can no longer produce often way before their usual lifespan.
Dairy farming does the same thing by taking the calf away from its mother hours after birth and then feeds the mother hormones to keep her producing milk for longer. the calfs are slaughtered for veal of raised for cheap beef.

-World Hunger
we slaughter and kill 60 billion animals each year to eat and 6 million children die of starvation each year. In order to feed animals we have to grow crops for them to eat. if we diddnt have to grow the crops to feed animals we could feed every human on earth with just plants.

-The effect on Climate and environment
The methane cows produce is going into the atmosphere and causing climate change. The meat and dairy industry causes more pollution than transport.

27 CLUB BRIEF

Create a work of art of one of the listed music artists that died at age 27. People include: Amy Winehouse, Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix

the work must be 27cm x 27cm and come with a short rationale

deadline 1st March

JIMI HENDRIX

 November 27, 1942 – September 18, 1970
His mainstream career only spanned 4 years but he is considered one of the greatest electric guitarists in the history of popular music.

He died aged 27 in London of a sleeping tablet overdose.

his favourite guitar was a Fender Stratocaster guitar that he called  black beauty.

his music was associated with the psychedelic rock movement and the imagery used is very distinctive.

This is the last photo taken of Jimi Hendrix the day before his
death.

The visuals for hendrix's albums follow a strong psychedelic aesthetic. They use bright colours such as blue yellow and pinks in contrast with each other. the typography is also really intricate and holds a strong place in the work.

MY WORK

I started off by drawing out my own typeface and then illustrated around it with a guitar that i modelled off Hendrix's favourite guitar that he was pictured with the day before his death.

RATIONALE

Jimi Hendrix was part of the Psychedelic Rock movement of the 1960's, I have tried to bring this strong aesthetic into my work using psychedelic visuals and typography. The work showcases Hendrix's favourite Fender Stratocaster guitar that he called 'Black Beauty'. Putting the guitar in the centre of the image shows how iconic it is to Hendrix's legacy. I have used the colours red, yellow and blue inspired by his iconic album artwork. I feel like the artwork behind Hendrix's brand was vital for his image and his guitar is symbolic of his stature in music culture.

LOGO DESIGN DEVELOPENT

After getting feedback on the initial design for Ned's logo, i was told i needed a vector image to make the logo have more personality.  I decided on using film and knives and forks to simply feature photography and food.

ZINE RESEARCH FOR COLLABORATIVE

SURVEY FINDINGS

I created a survey to get some views on vegetarianism and facts of how people eat including diets and weather they care about where the meat they are eating is from

VISUALS OF BASSLINE

Bassline's visuals incorporate street artwork and drug referances such as the smiley face and pills. The artwork also references fashion trends such as trainers and clothing. It uses striking colours to show the loud music it represents.

CRIT SB1

In the crit i presented my current ideas for baseline sub genre, the feedback i got was:

if baseline doesnt have a home then what is a home??

juxtaposition jewellery contrasting why its needed

to decide on an item to brand baseline what is the unform of the culture?

FOOD LOGO RESEARCH

The Guild of food Writers uses a logo of a pen nib with a spoon inbetween it, it is a very simple design but is very clever the way it joins to the two ideas.

i saw this logo up in the studio and it is similar to the guild of food writers as it is simple and combines two ideas into one pictogram.
