JIMI HENDRIX
November 27, 1942 – September 18, 1970
His mainstream career only spanned 4 years but he is considered one of the greatest electric guitarists in the history of popular music.
He died aged 27 in London of a sleeping tablet overdose.
his favourite guitar was a Fender Stratocaster guitar that he called black beauty.
his music was associated with the psychedelic rock movement and the imagery used is very distinctive.
This is the last photo taken of Jimi Hendrix the day before his
death.
The visuals for hendrix's albums follow a strong psychedelic aesthetic. They use bright colours such as blue yellow and pinks in contrast with each other. the typography is also really intricate and holds a strong place in the work.
MY WORK
I started off by drawing out my own typeface and then illustrated around it with a guitar that i modelled off Hendrix's favourite guitar that he was pictured with the day before his death.
RATIONALE
Jimi Hendrix was part of the Psychedelic Rock movement of the 1960's, I have tried to bring this strong aesthetic into my work using psychedelic visuals and typography. The work showcases Hendrix's favourite Fender Stratocaster guitar that he called 'Black Beauty'. Putting the guitar in the centre of the image shows how iconic it is to Hendrix's legacy. I have used the colours red, yellow and blue inspired by his iconic album artwork. I feel like the artwork behind Hendrix's brand was vital for his image and his guitar is symbolic of his stature in music culture.
