Pantone Books

From my reearch into colour theory especially pantone, I learnt alot about colour and how to use it. I found it very interesting creating a colour palette from a photograph. I would not usually look into colours so in depth I would just choose the first thing that looked ok. The colour combinations that came about from this were much more refined than I would normally be able to pick myself. The concept of colour picking is something that I would like to explore fiurther and I think my second booklet turned out quite well. The project enabled me to look at colour theory such as contrasting and analogous colours.

My pantone booklet was my chance to be free with my work. I chose typefaces based on my personal preferances. I chose Helvetica and Futura, there are not only my favourite typefaces but a popular choice of designers around the world, as I was creating a design booklet, I thought it would be good to keep within the context of contempary design. I feel I need to broaden my use of typefaces as I always tend to stick with the same ones, i need to experiment with more unusual and interesting typefaces in order to make my work more exciting. Although i think that my choice of typefaces work well within my work, i feel i have chosen a safe option and would like to explore more unusual and less overused typefaces.

The pantone booklet and Colour theory were great opportunities for me to practie my layout skills. I found that less is more and the best design is simple with plenty of negative space. I learnt alot looking at layout in my pantone booklet, getting the balance right on each page was tricky, in my second pantone booklet I decided to scrap alot of the information and create an easier layout for myself and let the pictures and layout doing the talking itself. I am not entirely happy with the layout, i think my layout skills are not my strongest point and i would like to continue working on this.

In order to print out my booklet I needed a solid knowlege of Paignation so it was put together correctly. Making sure I thought about slug and bleed were also important factors. I found this part of the designing quite difficult as it is not something I have had to think about before. Also thinking about how the book was going to be put together was a learning curve for me, The bookbinding and Indesign workshops helped me figure this out. Bookbinding was a totally new skill for me and has enabled me to create things I havent tried before. There is one thing designing something on the computor but it is a whole new skill to design something to be printable. I did some testers before I printed my final outcomes, to check I had the piaignation was correct. This was a good thing for me to do as I couldnt figure out how to print double sided. I also practiced the bookbinding techniques and created samples to decide upon a stitch to use.

After completing my first colour theory booklet, i decided to dedicate a second booklet just to pantone as this was something I really enjoyed doing in the first booklet.
