MASSART BRIEF
On Monday morning we met the American group in the illustration room. From here we were briefed and put into our groups for the week. We have until Friday, when in the afternoon we will present our outcomes to the rest of the group.
We have two Americans, Britney and Janina in our group who have both never been to the UK before. It is then me and Jack from Graphic Design and Meghan from Illustration.
We asked the American girls what they wanted to do while they were in Leeds, they said they wanted to see the real Leeds. We instantly swayed into talking about the student area of Leeds, Hyde Park and Headingley. The girls wanted to find out more about this part and avoid the obvious tourist spots in the City Centre. The girls wanted to know more about what students do in Leeds and we obviously started talking about the Drinking culture amongst the students. We decided to focus our project around the pubs in Leeds. Pubs such as Brudenell Social Club in Hyde Park which has a long history as a working mans club but has recently become a student haunt and gig venue.
We chose to do the Otley Run as it was a fun way to show the girls the student side of Leeds in an afternoon but it also has so much story to tell that people visiting the city won't know.
Other ideas we had were:
Hyde Park Picture House
An old cinema in the centre of Hyde Park with a strong retro aesthetic showing films and hosting a number of arty events.
Norwood Mount Bike Shop
A man has a little bike repair shop in a shed out the back of a house in Hyde Park.
Brudnell Social Club
Working mans club turned student haunt in Hyde Park, very typically northern place but tourists wouldn't go there.
