OUGD403 Studio Brief 02 Research Into Fonts

Typeface Design

Joseph Muller Brockmann states that a graphic designer only needs a handful of fonts in their design work to make good designs, these are the fonts that he used.

Garamond

Designed by Claude Garamond in the 16th century, it is a serif font still used today in contemporary interpretations.

Caslon

Designed by William Caslon in the 1600's, it is a serif font.

Baskerville

Designed by John Baskerville in the 1700's, it is a transitional typeface with a great contrast between thick and thin strokes.

Bodoni

Designed by Giambattista Bodoni in the 1700's, it is a serif typeface with extreme contrast in weight variation. it has a small x hight and vertical stress.

Clarendon

Clarendon is a slab-serif typeface that was created by Robert Besley for Thorowgood and Co. in the 1800's. It has a tall x hight and short ascenders and descenders.

Berthold

Sans-serif typeface designed by Hermann Hoffmann in 1908, it has short descenders to allow tight line spacing and rounded corners.

Times New Roman

Created for the times newspaper in 1931, it is an old style serif font, the design is slightly condensed with short ascenders and descenders and a high x height.

Helvetica

Widely used sans serif typeface designed in 1957 based on 19th century typeface, Akzidenz-Grotesk. The font has an unusually tight spacing between letters and short ascenders and descenders.

Univers

sans-serif neo-grotesque typeface designed by Adrian Frutiger in 1954.This typeface came from the same origins as helvetica. The difference with univers is a slightly lower x height than helvetica as well as a few other details like a different tail on the Q.

Here are the font options I can choose from, I think my typeface needs to be based on a bold typeface to show impact.
