A type specimen is essentially a catalogue of a typeface so you can see it before you buy it. Type specimens are made by type foundries to show their typefaces to potential clients. The specimens show all the variations of the typeface such as bold, light and italic versions. They often come in a booklet or poster form but more often now come as a pdf document to save on money and paper.
